The Mandarin Studies Program at National Chengchi University is committed to the training and study of Mandarin Chinese

for international students. This commitment guides the teaching, learning and training activities within the Program. It offers

 a variety of non-credit regular courses and elective courses. Regular courses are designed to enhance listening, speaking,

reading and writing skills at different levels; elective courses are available for those who would like to sharpen their skills in

listening and speaking or to learn Classical Chinese, Business Chinese, Taiwanese, or Cantonese. Workshops, activities

and field trips are organized so as to provide students with opportunities to integrate culturally and socially with local students.

Program Dates and Academic Information

All classes are held exclusively in Mandarin. The regular program has three 12-week terms (Spring, Summer, and Fall) and one

10-week (or 9-week) term (Winter). The regular courses, divided into four levelsbeginning, low intermediate, intermediate,

and advancedaim to enhance fluency and confidence in all areas of language use and to familiarize students with the

culture of the Mandarin-speaking world. Small classes are designed to ensure individual language needs are met. Elective courses,

cultural activities, together with free pronunciation and writing classes are provided to create opportunities for language improvement.

nstructors in the Program are highly qualified with years of experience in teaching Mandarin Chinese as a foreign language to

individuals with various linguistic and cultural backgrounds.

*New students should pay NT$ 500 for the registration fee in addition to the tuition.

Application Procedure

Application may be done in person or by mail. Applications must be accompanied by the six required documents (refer to the application

form). Once your application is approved, a Letter of Admission will be issued for visa purposes, approximately one and a half months before

the term starts. New students should arrive in Taiwan one week before the classes begin to take the placement test, and, on the same day, pay

 registration and tuition fees.

The University and the Program  

National Chengchi University is situated at the foot of Mt. Chihnan, south of Taipei. Jing-mei River and Zhi-nan River run through the campus,

forming a beautiful verdant landscape with the surrounding hills and vegetation. The campus is within easy reach of the Taipei Metropolitan

Rapid Transit System, and there are frequent bus services from Central Taipei to the University. The university is engaging in International Initiative,

and it is the most diversified campus in Taiwan with international students from 38 different countries. Various support groups such as

Student Ambassador program and advising and support groups are available for consultation. The Mandarin Studies Program shares the

university vision in bringing cultural and international atmosphere to the program.

During instructional sessions students have free access to the Reading Room, Language Labs and Computer Room in the Center. Facilities such

as the University Library, Computer Center, Health Center, and Sports Center are also available on the campus.

Financial Aids

˙The Program provides a tuition waiver for full-time language students registered at the Center for at least one term.

˙The ROC offers Taiwan scholarships. Students must file their applications with the nearest ROC representative office for Taiwan Scholarships

     in their country before coming to Taiwan.

Accommodation

Students can apply to live in the dorms, where ten beds are available to regular language students during each term. Priority is given to new

students. Off-campus housing information may also be obtained at the Office of Student Affairs

(http://140.119.210.96/servlet/activity.sqryact?type=3). The rent for off-campus housing is approximately NT$ 4,000 to 9,000 (equivalent to US$130-300) per month.    

                       

Medical and Accident Insurance

Students must present proof of medical insurance taken out in Taiwan or abroad at the time of registration. If you do not already have insurance coverage, the Center will assist you in applying. The 3-month medical insurance costs NT$1,1001,500 per person.

Students who are enrolled in regular NCCU courses are covered by the university’s student group accident insurance policy. Other students must take out the insurance policy provided by the Language Center. The 3-month Student Group Accident Insurance costs NT$300 per person and the center will pay a subsidy of $100 per student, which means that each student needs to pay only NT$200.

Health Care

Health care is readily available: there is a campus Health Center and there are two district hospitals, Wangfang Hospital and Jingmei Hospital, which

 are in the university vicinity.  

Certification

Certificate of Enrollment and Record of Study can be issued for courses taken if requested.
