The Chinese Language Education Center (CLEC) of Providence University (A Catholic University) was established at the direction of the President of the University, Dr. Chia-Tong Lee, in the winter semester of 1996. It is an affiliated institution under the immediate control of the College of Foreign Languages and belongs to the group of sixteen Chinese teaching institutions duly recognized by the Ministry of Education.
CLEC is located in Shalu, the west of Taichung, enjoying the best weather conditions on the island. The temples and old houses scattered in this town definitely lead one to discover about its history. CLEC aims to provide interested students with the best possible opportunity to learn Mandarin Chinese and to study various aspects of Chinese culture.
The Center's instructors are all native
Mandarin speakers and most of them can speak English and other foreign
languages. Instructors are
able
to offer bilingual instruction to beginners and entirely Chinese instruction to
intermediate & advanced students. They have all received rigorous training in
Chinese as well as foreign languages, linguistics, literature, history and
philosophy.
More than 2000 students from 45 different countries have enrolled in our CLEC since its establishment 8 years ago. They are from the U.S.A., Canada, Europe, South Africa, South America, Russia, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, India, to name a few. Our CLEC admits exchange students from 29 sister institutions (see exchange students).
