Tunghai University

On November 10, 1953, the United Board for Christian Colleges in China (UBCCC) published "The Aims and Purposes of Tunghai University."  The academic goals of the university include creating an academic institution devoted to the search for truth; establishing admission requirements that not only recognize great academic promise, but also each individual student's character and purpose; as well as emphasizing cooperation among students.  In addition, the school also seeks to develop students into well-rounded individuals by coupling a student work program with the academic curriculum; fostering the spirit of democracy and freedom through the free exercise of faith; promoting respect for China's historical and cultural traditions; and advocating the duty to engage in East-West cultural dialogue.  Most importantly, Tunghai University emphasizes a goal of transcendence in which students take educational ideals acquired through study and spread them throughout Taiwanese society and, ultimately, to every corner of the globe.

Tunghai University trains its students to compete in the international arena. These students need to be creative thinkers and independent learners with foreign language abilities. In addition, they need strong character, integrity, and a dedication to the good of society.

THU Chinese Language Center

The Tunghai University Chinese Language Center was established in 1971 as the first Chinese language institute in central Taiwan.  In addition to its main purpose of teaching Mandarin Chinese, the center also offers courses in Taiwanese language and culture. The center has a strong team of teachers that has developed its own teaching material. The language center is in the process of developing on-line resources and a self-access learning center. Since its beginning, more than 4,000 students have attended the center.  Students have come from Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Columbia, Finland, France, Germany, Holland, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Nepal, New Zealand, Philippines, Poland, Russia, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
