CLIMATE
IN TAIWAN
Taiwan has a warm and humid climate. The summers are long, accompanied by intense heat, while winters are very cool but never severely
cold. Although the peaks of high mountains are temporarily capped with snow, even in the coldest months, frost is very rare on lowlands.
Throughout the island the mean monthly temperature reaches 20oC in April and remains above this level until November. The period from
June to September is the hottest time of the year, when the mean monthly temperature ranges between 26oC and 28oC. During this period,
there is no remarkable temperature variation between the south and north of the island. The daily maximum may rise above 30oC and remain
so for several weeks.
With the arrival of the cool season, the variation of temperature between the south and north becomes more apparent. Colder weather occurs
only in the north, when that part is subject to persistent rain or when it is influenced by a cold wave flowing southward from the mainland.
Taiwan lies in the path of the typhoon (also known as tropical cyclones) in this part of Eastern Asia. A severe typhoon, bringing violent winds
and torrential rainfall, will do heavy damage to field crops. The typhoon season in Taiwan generally lasts for 6 months, from late May to early
November. As regards the monthly frequency of typhoons in Taiwan, July, August and September have the greatest numbers with August being
the month that has the absolute maximum.
