TAIWAN’S
SUPPORT FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
– The Taiwan Scholarship Program
Taiwan has set up “TSP”(Taiwan Scholarship Program) for international students to study on the island. The purpose of the
Taiwan Scholarship Program is to provide foreign students with opportunities to pursue their studies in Taiwan and
to increase their understanding of Taiwan’s development, cultural heritage, and customs. It is also hoped that through this scholarship
program, Taiwan will be able to broaden its foreign relations, strengthen its existing international friendships - especially with its
allies enhance educational and academic exchanges, and be supportive of fostering cooperation with foreign governments, institutions,
cultural and other educational organizations.
Types of Scholarships
(1) Chinese Language Scholarships: These scholarships will allow foreign students to enroll at university-affiliated Chinese
language centers in Taiwan for the purpose of studying Mandarin Chinese. A stipend of NT$25,000 per month will be provided, over the
course of one year.
(2) Undergraduate Scholarships: Foreign undergraduate students will be able to receive a stipend of NT$25,000 per month, over
the course of one year, in order to assist them in pursuing undergraduate studies at universities and colleges in Taiwan.
(3) Postgraduate Scholarships: Scholarships in the amount of NT$30,000 per month will be given to qualified postgraduate foreign
students in order to allow them to pursue their master’s degrees or doctoral degrees at universities and colleges in Taiwan. Master’s degree
students will be able to receive their scholarships for up to two years, doctoral students for up to three years.
(4) Diplomatic Scholarships: This scholarship program is administered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Education
for the purpose of fostering strong international friendships and bilateral relations. Scholarship recipients will be provided with monthly stipends
of NT$30,000 and return trip economy-class airfare.Recipients will be able to choose to study Mandarin Chinese or to pursue undergraduate
or graduate programs, at institutions in Taiwan.Distribution of funds will be allocated according to the nature of the scholarship. Primarily
applicants from allied or developing countries will be eligible.
(5) University and College Scholarships & MOE Subsidy Programs: Individual universities and colleges will be able to use
subsidies provided by the Ministry of Education (MOE) together with other funding to establish scholarship programs. The universities and
colleges will determine the number of scholarship recipients and the amount of each scholarship.
(6) International Cooperation & Development Fund Scholarships: The establishment, of the ICDF Scholarships, are in
accordance with the Plan for International Training Programs in Human Resources.
