The International Chinese Language Program: ICLP is widely held to be the premier language institution for the instruction of both modern and classical Chinese in Taiwan. Since its original founding in 1963 as the Inter-University Program for Chinese Language Studies, it has offered intensive language training to over 2,000 students from over 20 countries. ICLP provides a year-long language program in a Mandarin-speaking area which upholds much of its traditional Chinese heritage and culture within the framework of a modern democratic society. ICLP aims to enable students to achieve broad and independent competence in spoken Chinese and to develop reading skills needed for academic research or other professional use. The language center has an audio-visual room, reference library and computer lab with full Internet access for the use of students. Situated within the campus of the prestigious National Taiwan University (NTU), it enjoys the benefits of a central location in Taipei along with access to the full range of NTU”¦s academic, recreational, and sporting resources.

Program Dates and academic information”G

The academic calendar runs from mid-September to early June, and is followed by an optional 8-week intensive summer term. Instruction consists of approximately 20 hours of class per week, in a mix of class formats. By keeping class sizes to a maximum of four, and providing a daily one-on-one platform for students to focus on their own particular needs, ICLP endeavors to meet the requirements and interests of each individual student as far as possible. Alongside our series of specially compiled language textbooks, materials used at ICLP were drawn from a wide range of sources, including modern and traditional literature, news broadcasts, films, newspapers, and lectures. ICLP also offers courses in Taiwanese upon request.

Student Life:

Both challenging and rewarding. Though the workload is geared to match the intensive nature of the courses offered and class time is expected to occupy a good part of your day, you should still find plenty of opportunities to explore life in and beyond the NTU campus. ICLP itself hosts frequent guest speakers on a variety of topics, both from the local community and abroad.  We also organize a series of relaxing and educational excursions and activities for students, including overnight field trips to old traditional village festivals, as well as day trips to museums, exhibitions, cultural and historical sites throughout Taipei and its environs.

Beyond school-sponsored events, the NTU campus has a well-stocked library and a full range of sports facilities for those who wish to burn off some of those fried-noodle induced calories.  NTU student societies also warmly welcome ICLP students, the choice ranging from hip-hop dance to poetry and from Taekwondo to drama.

Of course, weekends and holidays provide the ideal chance to explore Taiwan itself, an island whose mountains are among the highest in East Asia, and in whose sub-tropical climate can be found beaches, forests, gorges and hot springs in great abundance. In addition to its natural beauty, Taiwan”¦s multi-layered cultural milieu continually offers intriguing and unique blends, with the traditions of Han Chinese, Taiwan”¦s ten aboriginal tribes, Japan, and the West all manifest to various degrees. For the student with an adventurous spirit and enquiring mind, Taiwan offers a wealth of opportunities.

Medical Services:

For minor ailments, the student may go to the on-campus clinic or any of the local hospitals for treatments. They are responsible for the expenses, though. Insurance for total coverage of hospitalization is available and renewable at a rate of NT$1022 for a period of 90 days.
